Are Single Or Double Sinks Better In A Kitchen?

The kitchen is my favorite room in our home. And I have big plans for our kitchen renovation planned for next year. Something I’d never really considered before in terms of the design was whether we should do a double or single sink. There is currently a big, single sink, but in all of our other homes, we have had a double sink. This debate led me down a rabbit hole of which sink type is better in a kitchen: single or double?

Of course, the final word on the matter comes down to personal preference. However, there are some pros and cons of both single and double sinks that may influence your own opinion. Let’s take a closer look.

Single Sinks

There are some definite pros to single sinks. Having one, large sink simply allows you to place more dishes in it. I have always liked the clean, simplified look of a single sink. In most new builds and renovations, single sinks also come with a garbage disposal meaning any leftover food residue can be rinsed right in there.

On the downside, having a single sink means you aren’t able to separate things as easily, including when thawing out frozen food. In addition, if you’re someone who likes to wash dishes in one side of the sink and stack them to dry in another, this becomes virtually impossible in a single sink, requiring a countertop drying rack instead.
